Linking into ProQuest

This document explains how to set up links into ProQuest for articles, publications, and saved searches and explains the new OpenURL standards (supported by ProQuest) which make linking more powerful.

Creating an A-Z Title List Link for Patrons

You can quickly create a shortcut for users that will display the titles you have available.

  1. From your Local Administrator account, click Title List Download.
You will see the Title List Download page.
  2. Select the Client from the drop-down list.
  3. Select the desired database(s) from which you want to retrieve titles. (To select multiple databases, Ctrl-click.)
  4. In the Statistics area, select the statistics you want to see for the Title List.
  5. In the Format area, click the output format for your Title List.
  6. Copy the resulting URL in the URL field and paste it into a browser Address bar.
Then, either save the link or drag the address bar contents to your desktop to create a shortcut to the title list.

Adding Links to Your OPAC Using ProQuest MARC Records

ProQuest databases provide subscribing libraries with online access to selected periodicals, including journals, newspapers, and magazines. Most libraries want to include these holdings in the OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) they make available to patrons.

Now that many library catalog systems offer web interfaces, the possibility exists to not only describe these electronic holdings, but also link directly to the holdings from the catalog. Ideally, catalog users who locate a journal in the catalog will see a hyperlink to the list of available issues for the journal, taken from the electronic holdings. Browsing this list should allow them to navigate to specific issues and to retrieve the full text of specific articles.

The ProQuest Web site offers a MARC record service that lets you quickly download information to add to your OPAC. Follow these steps to request a set of MARC records immediately:

  1. From your Local Administrator account, click ProQuest MARC Records. You will see the MARC Records page.
  2. Click Request a Complete Set of Records Now.
You will see a confirmation screen asking you if you want to have a set of records delivered.
  3. Select the Request a complete set of records now check box.
  4. Click Save.
  5. If you have not set your delivery schedule, you will be prompted to do so before the records can be sent. Enter the information and click Save.

You will receive a message providing instructions on where to go to download a set of up-to-date MARC records in your email within 24 hours.

Creating OpenURLs to ProQuest

Tthe OpenURL standard is currently in final approvals. Link syntax optimized for retrieving content from ProQuest for both OpenURL version 0.1 and version 1.0 as balloted is provided below. OpenURL trial version syntax is still supported.
