Accession Number

The Accession Number is a unique number assigned to each record in the database. Each database using Accession numbers using a slightly different format for these numbers.

  • In the ERIC database, the accession number consists of a two-letter prefix followed by six digits. 'ED' and 'EJ' are possible prefixes, which identify the source file. 
  • In the PsycINFO and CINAHL databases, the accesssion number is a 10 digit number.
  • In the AGRICOLA database, the accession number is a 3 letter prefix (CAT or IND) which represents the source file, followed by 8 digits.

Article Title

The title of an article, such as "Peering into the Future of Careers." This search field locates the occurrence of search words in the title of the article.

Author

Use to find articles written by an author or reviewer.

Call Number (NAL)

This field contains the call number assigned to the document. NAL call numbers include LC classification scheme, NAL classification scheme, and shelving numbers by types of materials.

Used to search Chapter's Book index. This field contains information on the book a chapter is published in. It is only present in book chapter records.

Classification Description / Expansion

Use to find keywords within the classification labels or descriptions in articles. This lets you find articles across multiple classification codes (for example, all those dealing with "education") regardless of their class code. Use Keywords to search this field. You can also use Boolean, truncation and proximity operators.

Descriptors

Approved subject headings which appear in the thesaurus. They are assigned to consistently describe the concepts included in the content of an article or document. Record may contain descriptors in major/minor subject heading fields as well as within the subject field.
